JOB GOAL:

To help maximize student learning by working with individuals and small groups to implement material prepared by the supervising teacher or specialist.

 

Paraprofessional Educators implement prescribed instruction, and therefore are not responsible for the planning, diagnosing or prescribing of the educational program.

 

SUPERVISION:

Reports directly to the building principal (overall program) and the supervising teacher (day-to-day functioning of program).

 

NOTE: Paraprofessional Educators are assigned to the Director of Student Services who then assigns according to the needs of the system.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Paraprofessional Educators work with students individually and in small groups:

 

  1. Works in special education or general education settings, including but not limited to reviewing and reinforcing previously introduced lessons and implementing prescribed instruction.

 

  1. Alerts the teacher to special needs of individual students.

 

  1. Escorts and assists students as necessary, including lifting where appropriate.

 

  1. Administers or assists in the administration of alternative testing.

 

  1. May correct day-to-day work of students but shall not be responsible for grading or reporting to parents.

 

Paraprofessional Educators assist supervising teacher in addressing student needs:

 

  1. Carries out teacher-planned learning exercises including instruction of core curriculum, academic support and support of related therapies including speech and language activities, occupational and physical therapy activities and mobility training activities.

 

  1. Performs classroom and other appropriate tasks designated by the supervising teacher/principal.

 

  1. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certified teachers.

 

  1. Participates in staff development programs as assigned.

 

  1. Participates as an active member of the Special Needs or Supportive Services Teams, as necessary.

 

  1. Establishes an effective work relationship with classroom teachers, specialists, and administration.

 

  1. Assists K through 12 students in transfer activities and mobilization activities and/or non-medical hygiene assistance (i.e. changing diapers) in the absence of the nurse.  Another adult will be present for all diaper changes/toileting whenever possible.

 

  1. Performs other such duties as assigned by the building principal, supervising teacher, or Assistant Director for Student Services.

 

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

High school graduate.

 

Demonstrated interest in working with students.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to effectively meet and deal with students, school staff and administration; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations.

 

Tools and Equipment Used:

Phone console, copy machine, fax machine, typewriter, calculator, Macintosh computer.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move a child weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance and up to 80 pounds waist high with assis tance.  The employee may be required to physically support or otherwise assist disabled student(s).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

182 days; school year

6 hours per day [elementary & middle school]; 6 hours 17 minutes per day [high school] with 1/2 hour unpaid duty free lunch

Salary and benefits in accordance with the student support facilitator contract.
