Profile of a Natick Educator

JOB GOAL: The Teacher Librarian is responsible for day to day management of the library, implementation of the library curriculum, and articulation and curation of information literacy within the district. The teacher is also responsible for the supervision of library staff and ongoing parent contact. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Holds a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a master’s level program in library and information studies

 

Professional Certification: MA State certification as a Library Media Specialist

 

Specialized Knowledge: 

  • Competency in both print and non-print materials and educational technology
  • Experience with a variety of educational technology applications, design thinking and computer science basics and their integration into the K-5 curriculum
  • Commitment to equity and culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Ability to engage and motivate all students, including students with disabilities and emergent bilingual (English Learners - EL) students in a student-centered approach using a variety of individual, small groups, large groups, technology-based, and other high-interest teaching strategies
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student, staff and community engagement and cultivation

Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred, but will train the right candidate 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed
  • Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish and Portuguese, are highly desirable
  • Candidates should have a passion for working with students, families, and colleagues
  • Candidates must be flexible and collaborative
  • Candidates must be able to multitask in a fast-paced, supportive environment that nurtures student growth
  • Candidates must be organized and able to meet ongoing, time-sensitive deadlines for work production

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (not limited to)

The Teacher Librarian is responsible for day to day management of the library, implementation of the library curriculum, and articulation and curation of information literacy within the district. The teacher is also responsible for the supervision of library staff and ongoing parent contact. Other expectations include:

  • collaboration in the design, teaching, and assessing of learning experiences that incorporate inquiry learning, information and media literacy, critical thinking, and self-assessment
  • collaboration with building technology specialists to model effective and creative strategies for integrating library and technology skills in the curriculum
  • collaboration with classroom teachers as a partner in the instructional process
  • teaching of students to build on prior knowledge to construct new knowledge through research
  • providing of leadership and expertise necessary to ensure a school library program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and the school district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program
  • ensuring all patrons have access to and are effective users of ideas and information, including the ethical use thereof
  • administrating the library budget, digital assets, and the selection, acquisition, circulation, and sharing of resources
  • cooperating and networking with other libraries, organizations and community assets
  • evaluating, promoting, and using existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning
  • fostering a creative, welcoming, flexible environment
  • promoting a love of reading and lifelong learning 
  • identifies and addresses bias and its impact on rigor and opportunity for students and staff
  • updates practices and equitable access procedures

  • move about the classroom, school, school grounds, office, and/or off-site locations. 
    • On some occasions, it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces; 
  • remain in a stationary position for periods of time; 
  • operate a computer and other school/office productivity machinery (i.e., iPad, copy machine, computer printer, assistive technology, etc.); 
  • read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed matter with or without visual aids; 
  • position oneself to maintain files and access school/classroom/office materials;
  • communicate with others so that information received and given is understood and accurately communicated;
  • communicate and collaborate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members in person, via video conference, on the telephone, and/or in writing;
  • observe details at close range
  • in the school setting, ensure the safety of students;
  • multitask and meet multiple demands from several people;
  • lifting up to and including 25 lbs
  • the noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
